Frij (“we,” “us,” the “app”) scans photos of your fridge or pantry to identify ingredients and suggest recipes. We built Frij to work with as little of your data as possible. This policy explains what we handle and why.
The short version: Frij has no user accounts — we don’t ask for your name, email, or password. Your pantry and preferences stay on your device. The one thing that leaves your phone is a photo you choose to scan, which is sent to our service and our AI provider (OpenAI) to identify food. We don’t track you, show ads, or use analytics.
1. No tracking
Frij contains no advertising, no analytics SDKs, and no third-party trackers. The only server the app communicates with is our own backend. We do not sell or share your data for advertising, and we do not build a profile of you.
2. Information we handle
Photos you scan. When you scan your fridge or pantry, that image is sent to our backend and to our AI provider (OpenAI) to detect food items. It is used to produce your results and is not used to identify you.
Ingredients & pantry list. The items Frij detects or you add are stored locally on your device. We do not upload your pantry to our servers.
Diet preferences you enter. Free-text dietary notes and dislikes (which you may choose to include allergies in) are stored locally and sent with recipe requests so results can be tailored to you.
A random device identifier. Frij generates a random ID stored in your device Keychain. It contains no personal information and is used only to enforce free-tier usage limits so the free allowance can’t be reset by reinstalling.
Subscription status. If you subscribe to Frij+, billing is handled entirely by Apple. We receive only whether an active subscription exists — never your name or payment details.
3. Photos you capture
If you take a photo using the in-app camera, that photo is also saved to your device’s photo library. Photos you pick from your existing library are not copied anywhere except as needed to run the scan described above.
4. What we do not collect
No name, email address, phone number, or password.
No location data.
No advertising identifiers.
No access to your photo library beyond the specific photo you choose to scan.
5. How your scan photos are used
A photo you scan is transmitted securely to our backend, which uses OpenAI to identify food items and to generate recipe and meal-image suggestions. Your photos are used only to provide these results — not to identify you, not for advertising, and not to train AI models. A scan image may be briefly retained while your request is processed.
6. Service providers
We rely on a small number of vendors, who process data only to provide their service to us:
Apple — app distribution and subscription billing (StoreKit).
OpenAI — analyzes scan photos and generates recipes and meal images. OpenAI does not use data submitted through its API to train its models.
Supabase — backend database and storage for generated meal images.
Vercel — hosting for our backend service.
7. Data retention & deletion
Your pantry and preferences live on your device — deleting the app removes them. Because Frij has no account, there is no server-side profile tied to your identity. To ask about data associated with your device identifier, email us at the address below.
8. Children’s privacy
Frij is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your region), and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
9. Security
Data in transit is encrypted using industry-standard TLS. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect the limited data we handle.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
